CLEAN WATER &
STORED ENERGY

IPHROS has potential to do both.  Today.

MORE ON IPHROS

IPHROS combines proven pumped hydro storage with proven RO desalination.  IPHROS would provide clean water and energy storage and skilled jobs - at the same time.

How it works.  Seawater is pumped to a holding reservoir 500-700 meters above sea level.  When energy is needed, the reservoir is drained and the seawater stream is channeled downhill through turbines. Electricity is the output.  Utilizing this same downhill stream, seawater is "pumped" via elevation change hydraulic pressure through an RO desalination unit.  Clean water is the output.  Brine is further diluted with a separate stream of downhill "energy generating" seawater.  Benign brine discharge to the ocean reduces environmental impact.  The process repeats.

IPHROS details with potential locations were shared in a 2016 publication by MIT Professor Alexander Slocum and his team.  Coastal sites around the world have been identified including several in California and Baja California near large cities and with elevation gain of 500 to 700 meters.   IPHROCES (IPHRO Clean Energy System) is the term used by Oceanus P&W, the firm working to make the system real.  Visit the website link below to see progress and a timeline of the proven component systems.
