Legislation was reintroduced to "raise funding for the Bureau of Reclamation desalination grant program. The Desalination Development Act authorizes $260 million over the next five years for desalination projects and creates new environmental safeguards for the funded projects. The bill would direct the Bureau of Reclamation to submit project funding recommendations to Congress based on specific criteria, prioritizing projects that benefit drought-stricken communities. It would also require projects to comply with all state environmental laws, maximize the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency, and reduce reliance on imported water supplies from imperiled ecosystems." Several projects are outlined in the press release, and given the criteria an IPHROS project has high potential for California.
