Groundwater extraction near coastal cities accelerates sinking

Updated: May 13, 2022

PoliticoPro reported a study in Geophysical Research Letters that used "satellite data to measure subsidence rates in 99 large coastal cities"(1). The report stated some cities are sinking faster than sea levels are rising. In addition to natural processes, the sinking observation is proposed to be accelerated by groundwater extraction. To mitigate groundwater extraction effects near coastal cities (e.g. seawater intrusion, accelerated sinking), municipalities located near coastal mountains have the opportunity to utilize IPHROS.
