The power of AND. Published in 2016 by MIT Professor Alexander Slocum and his team, IPHROS has the potential to deliver clean water AND stored energy AND providing skilled jobs. For decades Pumped Hydro (PH) storage has been utilized to provide reliable energy during peak periods for millions of people. And for decades Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination has been utilized to provide clean water to millions of people. The paper describes the integrated system and the economic advantages for such an approach not realizable with the PH and RO unit operations operating independently. On a global basis the authors identify potential sites to build and operate, specifically coastal mountains located near drought prone municipalities (e.g. Los Angeles County , Orange County, San Diego County, Tijuana, MX).
