Pure Water project update - San Diego

Updated: Feb 5, 2022

Union Tribune reported on the project cost increase for the first phase of San Diego's Pure Water sewage recycling system. The Pure Water project is designed to produce half of San Diego's drinking water by 2035. The capacity by phase is noted as; Phase 1 at 30 million gallons per day and Phase 2 at 53 million gallons per day. The reasons for the increases are reported due to "higher costs for steel and other materials" and "lawsuits over which workers would build the system." Phase 1 of the project has increased from $1.08 billion to $1.21 billion. A high level breakdown of the project increases are noted as $90 million for litigation costs and $40 million for materials costs. The article notes the total project cost (Phase 1 and Phase 2) estimation between $4 billion and $5 billion. As noted in the article, the statement contact is the office of Shauna Lorance, director of the city's Public Utilities Department.
