Included here is the link to the public domain IPHROS presentation by Dr. Klaus Krüger, Senior Expert Plant Safety & Energy Storage Solutions at Voith Hydro, shared at the TMCES Workshop February 2020. The schematics and key points answer the question "How can pumped storage help provide CO2-free electricity and fresh water in arid coastal areas with scarcity of water"? The presentation references MIT Professor Alexander Slocum and team's 2016 paper, and summarizes what has changed in the past years to enable IPHROS. Stated improvements in the past two decades include; "reliability increase and significant cost decrease of RO, decreased cost of electricity by wind and PV, OEMs like Voith Hydro have developed materials and corrosion protection measures for steel structures in direct contact with seawater, and brine dilution using tail water flow in turbine mode can overcome environmental concerns making this system more real." The schematic illustrates passive RO desalination and the brine dilution approach to mitigate ocean return environmental concerns.
