So now what? Plan for Huntington Beach desal project rejected

Updated: May 28, 2022

On May 13, 2022 it was reported that the California Coastal Commission voted to reject the Huntington Beach desalination project as proposed by Poseidon Water (1). Included in the article was a link to the 200-page report detailing the concerns (2). A summary of the concerns are outlined here with IPHROS InfoHub comments suggesting IPHROS as a mitigation option.

I. Coastal Hazards: Flooding, Sea Level Rise, Seismic Hazards. By design this issue is mitigated by IPHROS with location at elevation and in proximity to utilize installed electric "to customer"distribution grid.

II. Marine Life and Water Quality. By design this issue is mitigated by IPHROS as the effluent brine is diluted on return to the Pacific Ocean.

III. Environmental Justice. By design this issue is mitigated by IPHROS as a strategic resource. Renewable energy is utilized and combined clean water and energy storage as outputs greatly reduce operational costs for southern California municipalities.

IV. Wetlands and Environmentally Sensitive Habitat. By design this issue is mitigated by IPHROS as the location is not wetlands or environmentally sensitive habitat.

V. Coastal-Dependent Override Provision. IPHROS as a renewable energy driven process with proven energy storage and desalination processes contributes to plans to mitigate bigger picture climate change effects.
